Ulva Island and a hike
What a day! We got up and caught the 9am river taxi to Ulva Island (barely).
Ulva Island was incredible. It is one of the few places in New Zealand that has completely eradicated rats, stoats, and possums, meaning that it is teaming with birds. We also got incredibly lucky, seeing 3 kiwis (very rare even on Ulva island), so many sea lions, as well as tons of other birds. It was hard to keep track. We spent 3 hours walking around, and could have stayed longer.
In the afternoon, we took the long way back…very long and more than a little lost. We followed our topological map, which got us onto something that somewhat resembled a trail. By the end I was covered in scratches and spurs, but after hopping someone’s fence, we were able to make it back to civilization. We finished up a second bottle of sunscreen today.

A hen and chicken fern. It reproduces by creating clones that fall from the fern.
That might look like a lump…it’s a sea lion. I don’t think we are going through there.
A wingless bird! It’s called a weka!!!
And we are off to Ulva Island, which has been totally eradicated of rats. The bird life should be incredible.
Brrrrrreakfast!
